This show is the finale of U2's Vertigo and Pearl Jam's Pearl Jam world tours. Mike and Ed join U2 for "Rockin' in the Free World", which has similar lyrics to the performance at the "Make Poverty History" concert.
Second last stop on the tour, but it's the last headlining show for PJ in 2006. This show is amazing in every way imaginable. Great setlist with some good surprises throughout.
This is the last stop on the Australian tour and the band doesn't disappoint pulling out great covers like "I Got You" and a great "Save It For Later" tag on "Betterman" and a few rarieties like "U" and "In Hiding".
Second night in Adelaid is just as fun as the first with a rare "Throw Your Hatred Down" making it into the setlist.
The band is met with a raucous Adelaide crowd who are revved and ready to go. The band spits out an endless number of tags and mini-covers throughout the night, evidence that the band are in a fun, relaxed mood.
After two previous tours in Australia, Pearl Jam plays for the first time in the city of Newcastle. "Alive" starts the show, which doesn't happen often (Dallas '03 and a handful of times in 1991. Newcastle is the home of World Champion Surfer and Ed's friend Mark Richards. Ed first thanks Mark's family who "let this guy come to all but three of our Aussie shows." He continues, saying that Mark's "inspired us each night as he's done for about 25 years or so. We are going to name this concert after him, the 'Third Annual Newcastle Mark Richards Invitiational'. (Cheers) Please welcome Mark ... the mayor of Newcastle, the prime minister of all things ocean, Mark Richards. We've stayed in touch over the years and he knows our music well, and we offered him the opportunity to put together a setlist, so this was his setlist tonight. But if we were gonna play his setlist he was gonna have to do something for us." Ed then hands mark his wine bottle and Mark starts vigorously chugging to a chant of "Skull! Skull" (the Australian equivalent of "Chug! Chug!"). Mark hops on the microphone and makes the whole band blush by asking the crowd "Is this the best fucking band on the planet or what?" to huge applause. Ed recognizes the great atmosphere at show's close "I don't know if it's gonna get better than this. Take care of your town, take care of each other. Bring our soldiers back." "Yellow Ledbetter" contains a long "Little Wing" tag.
Pearl Jam returns to Sydney for their third show on this leg of the tour. The other shows were earlier in the month, November 7 and November 8. Ed had hinted shows after the Nov. 8th one that the Sydney crowd was somewhat subdued, and started this show off with a big singalong "Better Man". Following the song's last chorus and over the "Save It For Later" chords, Ed addresses the crowd right away "Hello Sydney. I don't know about you, but I got a feeling. We got a feeling tonight. It's a Saturday night! (cheers) It's our last show in Sydney, so let the singing begin." The end of "Better Man" has the crowd singing along loudly. Ed addresses the crowd "Don't get cocky now, but this is without a doubt the best Syndey crowd we've played for in quite some time(cheers) ... this is the Sydney we remember!"
Ed comments about the unseasonably cold weather in Melbourne by mentioning that although the band weren't allowed liquids on the plane, they did bring the Seattle weather with them. He thanked the crowd for filling the 15,000 seat arena for three nights, and that he hoped to play it with the roof open (the arena has a retractable roof as the venue is used for the Australian Open Tennis Championship), that they'd have to try it next time.
Two High-Definition video screens are in place above the sides of the stage near the speaker stacks throughout the Australian tour. During the breakdown of "Go", Ed pulls off his jacket and tosses it vigorously behind him, sailing it over and behind Matt's drum kit. Regarding this second night in Melbourne, Ed says "For those of us who didn't sleep last night, it's just a continuation" and that the evening is "just encore number three".
During the "Daughter" tag, Ed changes one of the lines in "Another Brick in the Wall, part II" to "President Bush, leave those kids alone". Ed makes fun of the Australian Prime Minister John Howard's close relationship with Bush, references Howard blaming the economic downturn on shortage of bananas, and referred to Howard as "Bush's banana" to laughs and cheers from the crowd. Eddie comes on after the 2nd encore break alone on stage for "Dead Man". During "Rockin' in the Free World", the crew tried to throw a tambourine for Eddie, but hit Stone in the head instead. During "Yellow Ledbetter", Ed spots a security guard trying to remove an audience member for smoking, and cuts off from the song to let the guy stay since it's the last song, and asks the guy to give him a cigarette. When the security guard pulled away, Ed went back into the second verse of YL and improv-ed this little episode into the lyrics, followed by a "Little Wing" tag, complete with full vocals. On the setlist but not played: "Parachutes" and "Know Your Rights".
Another loud, sold-out Brisbane crowd experiences a powerful and energetic show. "Save You" sees the front rows clapping with Ed during the middle. Following "Dissident" Ed comments that "... it didn't feel like we'd even made it to Australia until the show here last night" (one of many references made during the Australian tour regarding the subdued Sydney crowd on Nov. 11).
The crowd is very energetic and participates throughout the show. During "Black", the front row swayed with their arms around each other, and Ed made a comment that he'd never seen anything like it. "Black" ends with a modification of the delicate standard improv "we didn't belong together". There was a young boy in the front row during the second encore, and so Ed sang the "while you were sitting home alone at age 13" line in "Alive" to him. Ed also threw him his towel and a tambourine, and Mike threw him a pick. During "Alive" Ed went into the audience up on the side of the stage, then ran down the pit slapping hands to the fans on the other side. Referring to a past show, Ed said "You know the good thing about having a shit crowd? ... Which we might have had recently - is that it really makes you appreciate a great crowd. And you guys are great." Ed also said he hoped that the exact same people show up tomorrow night. We'll see... I can't imagine a non-fan club show will be as good as this one."
For the second show in a row at the Acer Arena, the crowd is relatively sedate compared to the previous night. At times, Eddie is frustrated at the lack of response, commenting that they expected tonight's crowd to be better, but it sounded like they were in church.
Ed references that November 7 is election day (State/Local elections, not Presidential) in the United States, and jokes that he'll be looking for a beach-side shack in Australia if the elections go poorly. Jeff and Matt take their turns gesturing to Ed that they want one for them too, and Ed jokes "we could get one for Jeff and Matt and then we'll play for free every month". At one point in the show, Ed references the Melbourne Cup horse race which was held earlier in the day, and says Matt "could beat them all - he's one fine thoroughbred."

A few hours before the show, heavy rains fell on a beautiful Arena di Verona. It stopped raining for a while (just in time for My Morning Jacket set), but before Pearl Jam took the stage a downpour came back. Ed welcomed the crowd saying "buona sera" ("good evening") and the band started playing "Release".

Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale joins the band for "Hunger Strike".
This show marks the first show in Belgium since ... ever! Pearl Jam previously had cancellations in 1992 (07/04/92 - Torhout Festival, 07/05/92 - Werchter Festival) and the 07/02/00 Werchter Festival following the Roskilde tragedy. The audience sang the "doo doo-doo"s at the end of "Black" and repeated it for minutes, with the band eventually stopping and Ed signaled to the crowd we gave him goose bumps. Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale joins the band for "Hunger Strike".
This show in Arhem marks the first show in the Netherlands in almost ten years, following the cancellation at the Sportpaleis Ahoy' on July 3, 2000 following the Roskilde tragedy. This venue, the Gelredome, is considerably larger - about 30,000 capacity - than the Sportpaleis Ahoy'. Ed asks the crowd to be nice to each other and to watch out for their neighbors, "because the world outside is ugly as it is". A lot of older songs were played, much to the enthusiasm of the crowd. The tag on "Better Man" was "No Woman, No Cry" which Eddie eventually turned into "when I have no woman, I cry".

Pearl Jam begins the third of four legs of the world tour in support of Pearl Jam. There are two premieres at this show: "Education" (Binaural) and "The Boys are Back in Town", a cover by Dublin's Thin Lizzy. Ed greets the crowd and recognizes the time that has passed, "Hello, I think it's been a long time. I know exactly how long it's been, I think it's been six years or so. And a lot can happen in six years. Thanks for giving us this welcome back into this part of the world. Everybody OK out there? A lot can happen in six years: some of you might have graduated, got jobs, gotten out of prison. A lot can happen in 6 years. Probably the most important thing you'd take pride in knowing is that I fell in love with a woman that has Irish blood in her (Cheers) - her last name is 'McCormick'. And it happened to Mike McCready as well ... fell in love with a girl named "O'connor". And to top it off, now I have a little girl with Irish blood in her. So here's to the fire and the blood of the Irish."
The final show of the second leg of the 2006 tour. Another brilliant performance. Setlist is full of rarieties and great covers. The band is on and everyone knows it.
