This benefit for the Bridge School, a program for communicative and educational development of severely physically challenged non-speaking children, also featured Neil Young, Elton John, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin and Sammy Hagar. PJ plays revised versions of 'Jeremy' and 'Black,' premiers 'Daughter' and performs Steven Van Zandt's 'I Am a Patriot.' 'Angel' is particularly sweet and has only been played live once before

After a nice 'Release' opening, Ed says, "We're in a beautiful place. Why go home?" leading to guess what song? After a few opening licks of 'Breath' are played, the song is announced as 'A Breath and a Scream,' as it frequently was called then. Later Ed asks, "Did we meet some of you guys last night? Cause the tickets were good for both nights, right? That's how I wanted it to work out." After repeating, "I'm not crazy, I'm not crazy," they launch into 'Even Flow.' A few 'Hard To Imagine' riff are played after 'SOLAT,' and an improv based on 'Hard To Imagine' follows 'Black.' Ed tells the crowd, "You're all gonna die some day; you're all gonna die fat and old ... it's true," leading to 'Alive,' followed by some guitar noodling. Ed compliments the "pit" likening it to a "Norelco razor" with the three spinning heads. The second set opens with a jam with lyrics based loosely on 'Throw Your Arms Around Me.' Ed thanks everyone who they've met and says it makes them want to move there and "I wanna have your baby." After 'TITFW,' Ed says goodbye and then asks the lights to be turned back up: "I wanna get a picture of these guys."

This concert ("A Drop in the Park") was the rescheduled date for the originally planned May 20 Gas Works Park free show. Despite some traffic difficulties, the show went rather well. Reportedly, this effort for Rock the Vote inspired approximately 3,000 young people to register to vote. Ed comments, "If you don't vote, you can't complain about the outcome." This show probably cost PJ $100,000 of their own money to sponsor. Ed tosses the mic high above, it catches over the scaffolding, he climbs up a pole--hanging for a bit--and then slides down the cord. Ed notes early in the show, "This is like the OK Hotel times one million." Ministry's drummer and Bruce Fairweather (Mother Love Bone) join PJ in 'RitFW.' At the show's close, Ed exclaims, "I can't believe we did it! You did it!" smiling

Unusually, 'Baba O'Riley' opens this set. Mike is clad in a plaid skirt. 'Sonic Reducer' is introduced as "... a song about shooting up in the pit." He wisecracks, "So, whattaya think? No Pearl Jam songs today" leading to 'Even Flow.' A few 'Hard to Imagine' riffs are played before 'Alive' with lyrics about "somebody told me ... one night in New Orleans ..." Later Ed says, "You'd all better vote to keep it a fuckin' free world," and "I hate to inform you boys but I've seen quite a few of these and this ain't no pit." He asks, "Is there anybody else left back there to play? Oh, there's someone" and Chris Cornell joins PJ for 'Hunger Strike' and 'Reach Down.' Matt Cameron replaced Dave on drums. This is the only (in addition to the 8/14/92 Lake Fairfax show perhaps), impromptu Temple of the Dog reunion with all members of both PJ and Soundgarden present.

Intense performance. Lyrics mumbled at the song's end by Ed hint that PJ wanted to perform 'Sonic Reducer,' an old punk song by the Dead Boys, rather than 'Jeremy' ("I don't need no ... I don't need no mom and dad.")

Ed warns after 'Even Flow': "I just want to tell all the photographers, you look like really nice people and those look like really nice cameras. You're standing pretty close and I can't keep control of myself, not with this many people here." Later he leads the crowd in a rousing chorus of "fuck." After Jeremy, "You guys need water ... Let's get these hoses fucking going. If I need water they need water."

About two songs into PJ's set, it begins pouring down rain, but the crowd remains very intent on listening to the show. The downpour turns most of the lawn into mudslides. Vedder and Cornell were spotted out on the lawn sliding together after the Soundgarden set and "teeing off" with fans using a golf club and plastic golf balls!

This show, originally scheduled for the Melody Club, was moved to this outdoor venue due to the current popularity of Ten. With no opening act, Ed and Mike took the stage to open with two acoustic songs. Ed is very chatty with the audience, beginning by saying, "Today it just feels good ... a fast one or a slow one?" and playing the Police cover, 'Driven to Tears.' Then, " ... it's a song about summer and outdoors" and playing the Hunters and Collectors tune, 'Throw Your Arms Around Me.'

Unusual fast version of 'Wash.' A short clip of 'Sonic Reducer' was broadcast on CBS's New Year's Eve broadcast. (One of the cameramen almost does an unintentional stagedive, camera and all.) Ed thanks Keith Richards, saying, "If it weren't for Keith, Mike McCready wouldn't even be here." The rare 'Dirty Frank' had not been played previously live in its entirety.

Amazing version of 'Black.' 'Even Flow' is dedicated to Dee from L7 as she "... hasn't had her period for nearly two months." Lyrics are modified to "... pillows made of Tampax." Just before 'Porch,' PJ sings 'Happy Birthday' to Dave, with a few opening bars of 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' played before. Ed starts chatting after 'Leash'...stuff about great audience, really nice to them, etc. Then he says, "It's Dave's birthday and he's gonna play guitar for the first time in front of people ever ... and usually when we play, I just let people know what's on my mind cuz, I dunno, it usually takes over. Tonight also is like the night that me and my girlfriend have been together for eight years. It's serious. It's probably the sole reason that I'm alive. But, ah, that's why I wanna stick around on earth. I don't ever wanna be an angel or nothin'. I wanna be right here with her and, ah, so let's try this song." Dave plays guitar while Ed sings 'Angel.' This is the first, of only a few times, that 'Angel' is played live.

During 'Porch,' Ed climbs up onto the balcony and starts working his way all the way around the venue on the edge of the balcony. About 3/4 of the way around, two security guards grab him and pull him off the edge. They don't realize who he is, thinking he is a fan climbing. When they realize their error, they let him go. Ed stands on the edge of the balcony and then drops down onto the crowd below - quite a drop but they catch him! Then he "swims" to the stage, picks up the mic and says, "I can do ... whatever the fuck I want!"

1992-03-16 New York, NY

In a riveting performance, PJ shows the world that their talent is tremendous and the songs solid, despite the lack of electric guitars (and using rented equipment). 'Oceans' and 'RitFW' were recorded, but never aired. Mike plays quite a lot of 'Angie' after 'State of Love and Trust' (during a break) and later, riffs from Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' prior to 'RitFW.' (The PJ Unplugged was originally aired on 5/13/92.)

Ed comments, "There's a bunch of Americans in the audience. Hope they're not offending anyone ... as they are known to do." Before 'Jeremy' he says, "They're building Jeff a special bass for this next song and they're almost done with it." He continues to stall by singing a "little song my mom used to sing to me" and sings a song about "killing your neighbors ... mommy told me to," and then intros Jeremy saying "I wish he would have killed his parents. Then maybe he wouldn't have killed himself." The lead-in to 'SOL&T' is a Cat Stevens song. This show has a great, 7-minute version of 'Breath.'

First live 'Rockin' in the Free World' played by PJ, with Ed starting off by saying, "If we're gonna play it anywhere, we should play it here." Returning for the encore, Ed notes, "Just one thing, so it's clear ... we are not the sound of Seattle. There are many sounds of Seattle." During the 'Garden' jam, Ed tells the crowd to pass him to the back and then thanks them when he returns to the stage.

Ed has more words for stage divers: "Just a couple of words. In my whole life, I never wanted to be a policeman or anything of authority. But in fact, all my life I've been in a crowd like this, and whenever I was back there and people throw up onto the stage and jumped back off it always looked so cool, but when you are up here, see all these peoples' heads bein' smashed in by boots and stuff, it's really fuckin' ridiculous. Prior to 'Black' Ed notes, "You know, we canceled tomorrow night's show just because I knew I would sing with everything I got tonight ... a very good decision I think." 'Suggestion' is an extremely rousing version, renamed 'Saying No in Den Haag' by Ed. Stone and Mike sing an ear splitting a capella version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' before 'Porch.' Ed's brother, Jason, jams with the band during a long, lively version of 'I've Got a Feeling' including parts of 'Hunger Strike,' 'Say Hello 2 Heaven' and 'Jane Says' (by Jane's Addiction). The show gets off to a rocky start, as Ed skips a lot of lyrics during 'Once' as he's trying to deal with the crowd (saying "fucking cut it out" at one point). He leads to 'Alone' with "So if you've got a heart and give it away and someone breaks it, fuck em." After 'Alone' are the famous words to crowd surfers: "Hold on one second ... see your boots there ... the big shiny metal buckles? See these people's heads here, because they are people's heads and these aren't fucking casaba melons. Everybody, it's a beautiful thing when you lie down on top of the crowd looking like Jesus Christ. But I swear all I wanna do is crucify you when I see you smashing peoples' heads." There is plenty of interaction with the audience -- Ed being very chatty despite discussing how his throat hurts.

The night begins with Ed's hello, "Que onda, Monterrey?" a common way young people in Mexico greet each other. The Auditorio Coca Cola normally holds 20-40,000 capacity but the entire venue was not opened up, so the attendance was only 8-10,000, prompting Ed to start "Hail, Hail" off with the modified lyric "Looks like there's room for both of us." Ed welcomes the crowd in Spanish, saying "Hola Monterrey, como esta? Nosotros estamos contentos" which translates (roughly) to "Hello Monterrey, how are you? we're fine." He then switches to his native tongue, saying "Is it ok if I speak English? It's hard for me to speak Spanish when I'm drunk, you'd understand" and continues "But, you know, we've been a band for 15 years and it's very nice for us to be able to come to a place we've never been before."

The crowd is singing loudly with every word - as well as the guitar parts!! Given the location, lots of references to Bruce Springsteen - from Ed's preset covering Bruce's "Atlantic City" (from Bruce's Nebraska, which he said used to play a lot "when I was a kid" but hadn't played since then), to Ed singing lead on Bruce's "Promised Land" with Sleater-Kinney, to a brand new, previously unplayed Pearl Jam song which was a strong, plaintive ballad called "Gone" and was reminiscent of early, acoustic Springsteen (lyrics included "a tank of gas feels like money in the bank" and a big chorus of "I'm gone!").

Ed came on for a song at 7:45pm with his acoustic (plus capo), "appropriately" a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "No Surrender" from Born In The USA (Sleater-Kinney even covered Bruce's "Promised Land" during their set). Pearl Jam came on about 9:05pm. Being general admission in front of the stage, Ed addressed the crowd early on. A fan had actually crowd-surfed during a song and Ed remarked "none of this crowd-surfing shit", saying that they need to be careful, and that they were unfortunately being chastised for something that was allowed "back in '92". He continued with a plea to be aware, keep an eye on your neighbor and to be careful. "Raise your hand if you need to get out" he remarked to those who may have found the crowded front tough to manage and "those big guys in front will help you". He mentioned how "those same big guys" would throw out any more crowdsurfers (amazingly there were 2-3 surfers as the show went on, each appearing to get thrown out).
