2006-11-16 Melbourne, Australia

Ed comments about the unseasonably cold weather in Melbourne by mentioning that although the band weren't allowed liquids on the plane, they did bring the Seattle weather with them. He thanked the crowd for filling the 15,000 seat arena for three nights, and that he hoped to play it with the roof open (the arena has a retractable roof as the venue is used for the Australian Open Tennis Championship), that they'd have to try it next time.

"The 50-cent Story":

Stone bemoans his missed coin
After "RitFW", Ed said that he was going to do something that not only had never been done at a Pearl Jam show, but perhaps never at any concert ever. It was something he learned to do the night before in Melbourne with an Australian 50-cent piece... so he places a wide-mouthed yellow glass center stage, walks over to the mixing table, sticks the 50-cent piece between his butt cheeks and walks gingerly over to the cup, positioning himself over it, and releases to try to drop the coin in the glass. He misses! It hits the rim of the glass and falls away. He said he couldn't take the pressure. As a consolation to the crowd, Jeff gave Ed his slightly over half-full wine bottle (filled with water) and Ed guzzled it all down in a long swig. After "Ledbetter", the group took a bow center stage; Ed took the 50-cent coin out of his pocket, and Stone asked Ed for it. Stone walked over to the side of the stage, Ed grabs the cup and puts it in place, and Stone holds up the coin, sticking it firmly where the sun don't shine. He does HIS version of the walk, releases, it drops right in the center of the glass but then bounces out! Stone throws his hands out in dispair as the rest of the band almost falls over laughing.
