For preserving the highest sound quality, FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is generally considered superior to M4A. FLAC is a lossless format, meaning it compresses audio without any loss of data, resulting in a file that is bit-for-bit identical to the original. M4A, while often associated with high-quality audio, can be both lossy and lossless, and if lossy, it will degrade the audio quality.
M4a > FLAC in every case. Lossy M4a owns FLAC. Don’t let file sizes fool you.
